Andres Arias The National Mall The Mall is located between Pennsylvania and Constitution Avenues. It is where all the important monuments in Washington, DC are located. There are many museums located at both sides and is dedicated to George Washington. It was designed by L’Enfant in 1791 based on the classical European grass carpeted avenues. The plan was forgotten during the 19th century due to the Civil War. The area was used by the army for many other things like slaughtering cattle and presenting arms. The railroad placed a warehouse and tracks inside the perimeter in 1872. Before that, in 1851, Andrew J. Downing from New York City was hired to remodel President’s Park landscape, but his plan was not carried out. The McMillan Commission proposed in 1902 to return to the original plan created by L’Enfant. The broad grass carpet was bordered by four rows of American elm trees on both sides and by public buildings as well. The railroad station was removed in 1909. The Mall was designed to be the most important avenue of the city. It was thought to run between The Capitol and the President’s House and would be decorated by a statue of George Washington on horseback. It has many museums in both sides and two entrances for underground museums, and the Department of Agriculture. The National Museum of the American Indian opened its doors to the public in 2004. It is important because it is first national museum in the country dedicated exclusively to Native Americans. The structure was designed by Douglas Cardinal, a Blackfoot Indian. The National Air and Space Museum is made of glass and granite and opened in 1976. There you can see the Wright Brothers' Kitty Hawk plane and the Apollo II space capsule. The Smithsonian Museum was designed by James Renwick and built in 1847-55. It was remodeled after a fire in 1865. The museum was named after James Smithson, an Englishman who donated his entire fortune to found "increase and diffuse knowledge among men." There are other museums like the Quadrangle Museums that contains the Sackler Gallery of Asian Art and the National Museum of African Art. The Freer Gallery of Art was designed in 1923 by Charles A. Platt. It contains the Charles Lang Freer's collection of the painting and sculpture of Asia and 20th century American artists, particularly James A. McNeill Whistler. The Department of Agriculture was built in 1905 and designed by Rankin, Kellogg and Crane. This was the first building constructed in the Mall. The National Museum of American History was designed in 1964 by Steinman, Cain and White. The National Museum of Natural History was designed in 1911 by Hornblower and Marshall. The National Gallery of Art was designed by John Russell Pope in 1941. The Sculpture Garden was designed by the Olin Partnership and opened in the spring of 1999. The National Gallery of Art was designed in 1978 by I.M. Pei and Partners. The Capitol was especially impressive to me since it is huge and the building is very pretty. The art, paintings, and statues strongly called my attention. The size of the Mall is also very impressive and the fact that you can spend days looking at all the museums without getting bored. The Washington Mall isn’t what you think when you see the name, that is a Mall. The Washington Mall is a large piece of green area. Inside the area that occupies the Washington Mall there are most of the most famous museums in D.C. as well the monuments, memorials, and famous buildings as the Capitol.
The National is a place so people can gather around to have picnics or to have a great time; also people from all around U.S. come to visit the Smithsonian Museums, memorials, and monuments that are around the National Mall. Some other events that take place in the Washington Mall are protest ore political debates. This area doesn’t honor somebody in particular, but I think this honor the whole city of Washington D.C. for having this awesome place.
The materials that were used to build the national mall were mostly, grass, concrete, and trees. The national mall was built this way so it as surrounded by monuments, memorials, and museums, so it could have a great attraction for the people could come and enjoy all things. The National Mall was built by McMillan Commission for the improvement of park system in D.C. (District of Columbia). The Mall was started in 1902. Throughout the year the only changes that have occurred were that new memorial has been added to the Washington Mall.
This place doesn’t honor anyone. The Washington Mall is surrounded by most of the monuments in Washington D.C. so many historical things had happen here. One of the most famous one is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. speech “I have a dream” that took place in Lincoln memorial during a racism time in the U.S.
I think that what call more my attention of the Washington Mall were the green areas and how the government and the people conserve it so clean. What I found more interesting was that I didn’t know that Smithsonian Museums were in the National Mall I thought the monuments and the Capitol. I learn that the Washington Mall wasn’t a mall as I thought at the beginning and that the Smithsonian museums are inside the area of the Washington mall. What I already knew about it was that the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and the Capitol were inside the area that covers the Washington Mall. I felt surprise about how big was the National Mall. To I felt inspire and motivated at the same time of how clean was it and how people were having a great time in there. While we were there near the Washington Monument there were filming something or taking a photo-shoot to some I didn’t knew who was he but local people seem to know who he was. In my opinion the National mall haves a great purpose that is to give a green area to the city and having cultural things around it that can show the history of the country.
